I thought I was over Game of Thrones and the world of Westeros until the prequel of GoT, House Of The Dragon quite literally swept in, I'm now well and truly hooked. If you’re not familiar with what House Of The Dragon is about then it’s set 172 years before the events of Game of Thrones and it’s about House Targaryen in their prime, the first episode is about how King Viserys and his wife Aemma are about to welcome a new baby, which they’re obviously hoping is a boy and Viserys holds a tournament to celebrate the birth of his second child. Their teenage daughter Rhaenyra is getting used to the thought of not being the only child anymore and Viserys’ brother, Daemon who is known for being a tyrant arrives for the tournament, hoping the baby that’s about to be born is not a boy so he remains the heir to the throne. There are obviously other characters who show up in each episode such as Otto Hightower or ‘The Hand’, Viserys’ most trusted advisor who is a similar character to Littlefinger and his daughter Alicent Hightower who is Rhaenyra’s best friend, as well as Corlys Velaryon otherwise known as The Seasnake who is married to Viserys’ cousin Rhaenys Targaryen. If you like Game of Thrones but not planning on watching House of The Dragon because of how rubbish the final season of GoT was then try to forget about that and give HoTD a watch because it’s definitely giving early GoT vibes. Available on Sky/Now TV.
I also watched Season 2 of The Great which is about Catherine The Great and her arranged marriage to Peter The III of Russia but she ends up getting tangled up in wanting to change the politics which is all run by men, whilst being the target of a lot of gossip by in court and out of court. Her marriage to Peter is instantly a bad one because of how he treats her, the court and Russia in general so she plans to get rid of him so she can take the throne as she knows she could do better. It’s described as a dark comedy and an ‘occasionally true story', it’s quite crude, it’s not a TV show you would want to sit down and watch with your parents let’s put it that way. Both seasons are available on Starzplay.
I finished watching Only Murders in The Building the other day and I wasn't sure whether I was going to like it or not at first, but I ended up binge-watching it and loving it. It's about three strangers (Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez) living in the same apartment building on the Upper West Side, who end up realising that they're all a fan of a true crime podcast. Then there is a suspicious death in the apartment building that they live in and the three of them team up and end up investigating the death together as there are many things that just don't add up. Available on Disney Plus.
I’ve realised that I haven’t watched many films as of late, and the ones I have watched have been ones I’ve seen numerous times before. So I haven’t got any new (to me) films to recommend but here are a few of the films I’ve watched recently…
Meet The Fockers which is actually one of my favourite films and my favourite of the ‘Meet The Parents’ film series, it just has such a good cast such as Robert de Niro, Dustin Hoffman, Barbara Streisand and Ben Stiller. Dirty Dancing which is just a classic, isn’t it? I don’t really need to say any more about it. I also watched Nerve which is on Netflix like the other movies I've watched lately. Nerve is one of those shows that really makes you think about social media and how people can gain access to your personal info and life and how to use it against you. I definitely need to watch some films on my Watchlists soon.
For music, although I know I mention them a lot in these posts because they’re one of my favourite bands, I’ve got to mention Foals and their new album Life is Yours which came out in June. It’s different to their last two albums Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost Part 1 and 2. It’s more summery and catchy if you get what I mean. My favourite songs are 2am, Under The Radar and 2001.
Another band I’m going to mention is Editors and their latest EP Vibe. The song Vibe randomly popped up on one of my Spotify playlists and I thought it was really good. So I listened to the rest of the EP and I’ve got to say I’m looking forward to their new album which is out later this month.
I’ve also discovered some new music that helps me relax or sleep. I found a channel on YouTube called Lofi Girl and I personally like the live video playlist called Lofi hip hop radio - beats to sleep/chill to. The songs are mostly instrumental and I don’t know why but I just find it really relaxing. The other channel I like to listen to when I want to relax and also to help me to sleep is called Yellow Brick Cinema which has meditation music.
What have you been watching and listening to lately?
